Hillenmeyer signed with the Bears after being cut by the Packers at the end of the 2003 postseason. Hillenmeyer spent most of 2003 playing special teams for the Bears, but he became the starter a strong side linebacker in 2004. Since then, he has played alongside All-Pro linebackers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs, who have been considered to be one of the best linebacker duos in the league. Many believe that Hillenmeyer's efforts are overshadowed by the two.
Hillenmeyer ranked third on the Bears in tackles each of the past two seasons. On June 30, 2006, the Bears signed Hillenmeyer to a five-year contract extension through 2010.
